Set in 1800s Kirtland, this upbeat folk- and Celtic-inspired choral work follows the lives of Parley and Thankful Pratt as they navigate the failure of the Kirtland Safety Society and discover the true reason for their faith in the Lord’s restored church.
We are auditioning for ensemble and solo roles. Auditions are submitted online and are open now until August 31, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. Those accepted into the choir will be notified by email Tuesday, September 2. Soloists are then chosen from amongst the choir members. Callbacks for solo roles will be held in Utah Valley on Saturday, September 6, from 10 am–2 pm. Those who are not chosen for solos are still members of the choir. Generally, we avoid assigning too much importance to solo roles, because as with all gospel productions, the importance is in the message rather than in the talent. Soloists sing as part of the ensemble during the show except for when they have a solo. All choir members will be voiced and assigned to a part during the opening social (date and time below).
The Homestead Foundation was founded by Cristian and Erin Torres and is staffed by many dedicated volunteers who believe in the mission of building community through gospel-centered music. The choir is funded by the Torres family and donations from the public, and is composed of musicians like you who love to combine their musical talents with the doctrines of the restored gospel.
All rehearsals take place on Sunday evenings at a venue in or near Provo, Utah. The tentative rehearsal schedule is:
Our show is Sunday-appropriate and will be presented in chapels along the Utah Valley on the following evenings:
Standing on the Promises is a choral work written by Cristian Torres, with music by Kevin West. It features many hymns from the new hymnbook, including Standing on the Promises, When the Savior Comes Again, and Look Unto Christ. It also features music by CJ Madsen, including I Saw A Pillar of Light and Ask of God. The production runs about 1 hour and 15 minutes long.
The music is orchestrated in a style that is both folksy and cinematic. You can listen to a thrilling minute-long snippet of the overture here. The choir sings in the majority of the songs, and many characters also have short solos. Characters include: Thankful and Parley P. Pratt, Sister and Brother Allen, Joseph and Emma Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Grandison Newell, a doctor and a midwife, Warren Parrish, John Taylor, Mary Fielding, Thomas Marsh, David Patten, and William Smith.
The story is narrated by Thankful Pratt, the wife of Parley P. Pratt, and follows Parley's character arc as he suffers great losses from the collapse of the Kirtland Safety Society, becomes disaffected from the prophet Joseph Smith, explores the reasons for his own faith, converses with his Canadian converts and fellow apostles, and ultimately makes his way back to the body of the Saints. Audience members who are experiencing their own crises of faith will find strength and validation in Parley's experience—while family members and friends of those being tested will also learn about what it means to support those on their own faith journey.
